Why wouldn't they? It really depends on what programs you want to run. It's impossible to create a computer that doesn't get outdated relatively quickly.

For $ 315 youd get an i7. That chip would last you almost forever. Im still using an 875k and thats a 2009 chip. Despite what intel would suggest, were talking about something getting done in 2 mins instead of 2:30. Not really significant in my opinion.

Also a $200 video card can pretty much play anything great at 720p. Good at 1080p.

Overall the prices you quoted are way too high. Where you shopping at?

Also dont forget the cost of the case, cpu cooler, ram, storage, optical drive. Your sisrers budget seems to be high so look to spend $1200 overall before tax. I advise getting an ssd for the os drive and then a hdd for storage purpose.

oh i'm not shopping, she has a IT guy from her work doing the shopping
(i think they went to canadacomputers)

the software he's looknig to run:

* games (mostly minecraft at this point, but he's trying to get into the steam sales)

* i'd like him to get photoshop & 3dsmax at some point
-----------
her budget isn't really high she'd rather spend 1K or less ( if she could 600) but is wiling to go as high as 1.2K (all CAD) ...and i'll chip in i think
-----------
the main idea is to have a computer that lasts 3-5 with some upgradables ,
till he can go out and buy/build his own. So probabkly looking to get
a mobo / CPU / HD to last as long and everything else can be upgraded later.

SO probably the mobo/CPU to last through upgrades.

No idea why she wants to have someone else build rather than just buy prebuilt. Suck my bro-in-law doesn't have time, cuz he does this stuff.

Photoshop seems to require a monthly payment. Use GIMP, it's free.

give me the final specs bait and I'll try to find the best prices for you. I'm really good at finding deals. I can help with the build too if you run into problems.

buying parts seperate saves a lot of money. If your brother in law can put together a computer then that's the way to go. At least $200 will be saved.

Are sound cards even worth the money? That motherboard already has a creative chip built in, plus if he's using it for gaming chances are that will be through a headset making the sound card all but obsolete.

I'd also say forget the Samsung SSD in my experience you really just end up paying for the name (Amazon has it at a better price http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-75E.../dp/B00OAJ412U ), try and go for bigger capacity, 250gb will get used up very quickly.

those are ridiculous prices. Are you sure that's right? American pricing?

Samsung has a really good track record for SSDs. There are other cheaper options sure. Samsung's 500GB 850 EVO goes for about $150 american. Canadian pricing should be around $230

done , up and running playing warframe. The IT guy let him sit and watch the asm which was good.

....gonna get him to try planetside2.

I missed out on teh steam sales (batman arkham, r6vegas deals, Ark ) Don't think i can get him R6-siege , he's not 16 yet...and i don't wanna pay$60 damn canadian price. Need to wait on teh summer sale.

Gotta figure out about photoshop & 3dsmax ...gonna try GIMP first.

Yeah, I actually used Paint.NET for a long time. Unfortunately, it was not approved for use on my work computer so I had to use GIMP. No good reason to have both.
