Default Troubleshooting old(?) surfboard modem

I keep loosing internet every hour or so lately. I've had a tech come in and he replaced several splitters. Not really the problem, I think, but it was no charge for the service call. I had all the cables and splitters upgraded several years ago when I tried Voi-Select for a few months (which was a bad idea, since it was sucky on several levels).

Anyway, after some research, I find that my current internet modem, the Motorola SB5120, hasn't been made for several years (maybe since 2007). It's obsolete, and doesn't support DOCSIS 3.0. I'm trying to be somewhat intelligent about talking with tech service, and I wonder if this old modem might be the problem?

omg, I thought the isps recommend certain routers down in the states. If you've had service and now all of a sudden it's not working I can't explain that. It could be the modem if something did change with the isp, but I'm sure your isp would've notified you. I'd call your isp and find out from tech support.

Yeah, that's the one, Firefly. They came in this week while I was on a business trip and redid all the connections on the cables. Their log showed my connection going off and on over 300 times last week. Since it was my wife overseeing their work, I know very little about what they accomplished (she is a black hole of technology). Seems to be working now, but I think I might have gotten the modem software refreshed late last week by shutting it down for an hour.

You might need a firmware update, but upgrading to the DOCSIS 3.0 if your ISP supports it is definitely the way to go. Wal-mart, Target, and Costco in my area all sell the cable modems supported by the ISP's in our area. It doesn't help my ping to the game server but I can "research" much faster.
Dingdangit! Ohhh-Yeahhh!
